A new line-art page drops every day, with a bigger scene each week and a showpiece each month, and everyone gets the same one. People colour it on an iPad, tablet or phone, with an Apple Pencil, another stylus or a finger, and enter it for free. Entries are judged side by side, two at a time and without names, and each drop has a global leaderboard and one for every country. PencilDrop is made for people 16 and over.
PencilDrop is an adult colouring app with a daily art contest, made by Alt Dev Apps, an independent app studio in Brisbane, Australia. Every day there is a new line-art page, the same one for everyone, with a bigger scene each week and a showpiece each month.
People colour the page their way, with pencil, marker, crayon or airbrush, or a tap to fill a shape, and every stroke stays inside the lines because each shape on the page is mapped before it goes out. The app is made for Apple Pencil, with pressure, tilt and hover, and works with the S Pen, other styluses and a finger too. A finished page can be entered for free. Other people judge the entries side by side, two at a time and with the names hidden, so a first-timer’s page can beat a regular’s. Each drop has a global and a country leaderboard, and every finished page becomes a time-lapse video to share.
PencilDrop is made for people 16 and over, and it is quiet by design: there are no comments and no direct messages. Its line art is drawn with AI image generation, and a person checks every page before it goes out.
PencilDrop is free to download on Google Play for Android tablets and phones, and is coming to iPad and iPhone on the App Store. Every competition is free to enter, and an optional subscription, PencilDrop Plus, adds brushes, palettes and pages. Learn more at pencildrop.altdevapps.com.

We don’t print a price for Plus here, because it differs by country and store. The app and its store listings show the current price, so please check one of them when you publish.
A new line-art page every day, a bigger scene every week and a showpiece every month, and everyone colours the same one.
Every shape on a contest page is mapped before it goes out, so a stroke never spills over an edge and one tap fills a whole shape.
Press harder for richer colour, tilt to shade and hover to preview the brush. The S Pen and other styluses work too, and so does a finger.
Entries are shown two at a time with the names hidden, so every vote is about the colouring itself, and a first-timer’s page can beat a regular’s.
Each drop has a global board and one for every country, with season standings and a daily streak worth keeping.
A finished page becomes a vertical video that fills with colour from the first stroke, ready to share anywhere.
There are no comments and no direct messages, so the art does the talking. An entry can be reported, or a colourist blocked, in two taps.
Tap each shape for a finished page in a few minutes, or shade and layer it over an evening. Work saves as it goes, offline too.

Ashley Rowe is a co-founder of Alt Dev Apps, an independent app studio in Brisbane that makes PencilDrop, an adult colouring app with a daily art contest, and BubSync, a shared baby tracker. With a background in technology and product development, Ashley built PencilDrop around a simple idea: if everyone colours the same page, the only thing left to judge is what each person made of it. The app shows entries side by side with the names hidden, so a first-timer’s page can beat a regular’s, and it leaves out comments and messages so the art does the talking.
Ashley Rowe is an Australian founder and software builder, and a co-founder of the Brisbane studio Alt Dev Apps. PencilDrop started with a question he kept coming back to: why does a colouring app go quiet the moment the page is finished? In PencilDrop that is when it gets interesting. Everyone has coloured the same page, other people judge the entries in pairs, and tomorrow there is a new one.

“Colouring is usually something you do on your own and then put away. We wanted to give it a shared moment: one page, the same for everyone, and a day to make it yours. Seeing all the different takes on the same page never gets old.”
“We wanted judging that rewards the colouring, not a follower count. Entries are shown in pairs with the names hidden, so the only question is which page you like more. Someone on their first day can beat someone who has coloured for years, and we built it so that can happen.”
“PencilDrop is for grown-ups who want half an hour with a pencil at the end of the day. There are no comments and no messages, on purpose. It’s a quiet place to make something, and the art does the talking.”
Every picture downloads on its own at full size, so there’s no need to take the whole kit for one. They’re free for editorial use in coverage of PencilDrop, with credit.
The mark, the wordmark and the two together, for light and dark backgrounds. Transparent PNG, and SVG with the type drawn as shapes, so no font is needed.

The tablet panels from PencilDrop’s Google Play listing in Australia, so the words in them are in British spelling. They run as one strip in the store, so the strip is here whole as well.

The same five on a phone, as one strip and panel by panel.

These are our own examples of what a page can become, each coloured to a written colour plan. They aren’t competition entries. The lighthouse runs from line art to a page done in a few minutes to one that took an evening.
